In order to be a Maryland Registered Tax Preparer, you must pass the Maryland Individual Tax Preparer Examination.  Our Maryland Tax Return Preparer Prep Course will prepare you to sucessfully pass the Maryland Individual Tax Preparer Examination and be able to prepare individual tax returns.

IRS General Tax Preparer Requirements

The IRS requires all paid tax preparers to sign up with the IRS, pay a registration fee and obtain a preparer tax identification number (PTIN).  All tax preparers will need to renew an existing PTIN annually.  Enrolled Agents have separate requirements, Click Here to learn more.  Please note, residents of California, Oregon, New York and Maryland have separate state requirements. Maryland-IRS Tax Preparer Requirements

Maryland law requires that applicants for registration pass an examination, Section 21-302(e) of Title 16, Business Occupations and Professions, Annotated Code of Maryland.  Business Occupations and Professions, Annotated Code of Maryland. The new Maryland Examination will be available on October 1, 2014. The deadline for passing the Maryland Examination is December 31, 2015. After that date, passing the examination will be required before making application for registration. Current registered tax preparers will have until December 31, 2015 to take and pass the Maryland exam. The cost of the Maryland Examination is $65. The exam is updated annually on July 1st. Those tax preparers who have taken and passed the RTRP exam given by the IRS do not have to take the Maryland exam, but must submit a copy of their RTRP Certificate issued by the IRS or the letter of passing results as proof. The Maryland Examination is being administered by PSI Services, LLC. Information about how to schedule, pay for, and take the Maryland Exam may be found at the PSI Exams Online Website.  

The following individuals are exempted by law from the requirement to hold a state individual tax preparers registration:

1. a current, active CPA registered by Maryland or any other State,

2. an individual in good standing and admitted to practice law in the State or in another state;

3. an individual employed by a local, state, or federal governmental agency but only in performance of official duties;

4. an individual enrolled to practice before the Internal Revenue Service who is governed under circular 230 (exemption applies only to Enrolled Agents of the IRS);

5. an individual serving as an employee of or assistant to an individual tax preparer or an individual exempted under this subsection in the performance of official duties for the individual tax preparer or the individual exempted in 1 to 4 above.

About the Maryland Tax Return Preparer Prep Course

This tax course will prepare you for the Maryland Board of Individual Tax Preparers Examination and is based on 2018 federal and state tax law. The examination is administered by the State Board of Individual Tax Preparers which registers and regulates individual tax preparers subject to the authority of the Maryland Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation. One of the primary requirements for Maryland Tax Preparers is the successful completion of the examination. This course will prepare you for the examination. The course covers the personal tax return form 1040 including income, gains and losses, standard and itemized deductions, tax credits, small business schedule C and depreciation. Reading assignments and quiz questions will guide you through each tax topic so that you will be well prepared for the examination. A final test will also allow you to practice for the actual examination and includes the same number of questions and the same time allotment as the actual examination.
