In order to maintain the Enrolled Agent designation you will need to successfully complete our 30 hour EA Personal and Business Entities tax course annually which includes the required two hours of ethics. With this tax course, not only will you exceed the annual IRS minimum requirements for EAs, you will also meet the National Association of Enrolled Agents (NAEA) more rigorous CPE standards, which require a minimum of 30 hours of Continuing Professional Education (CPE) be completed annually.
NAEA requirements for membership exceed the Internal Revenue Service’s standards: members, associates and academic associates must acquire 30 hours of CPE per calendar year. NAEA requires members attest to the number of CE hours taken on a yearly basis, prior to or concurrent with the renewal process. Members attest to the hours taken during the preceding calendar year. In accordance with IRS requirements for enrollment renewal, members and associates must earn at least 2 hours of Ethics in each calendar year.
EA CPE Requirements
Course Prerequisites: High school diploma or high school diploma equivalent is recommended. Current registration as an Enrolled Agent with the Internal Revenue Service is required. The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) also require individuals to possess a valid Preparer Tax Identification Number (PTIN).
Enrolled Agents renew their license on a staggered schedule, based on the last digit of the enrolled agent’s social security number. The current fee for renewal is $30.00 per year. To be eligible for renewal for the enrollment cycle, Enrolled Agents must complete 72 continuing professional education (CPE) credit hours for the three year cycle, with a minimum of 16 CPE per year. Two CPE credit hours per year must be in Ethics. We will then report your course completion to the IRS, course completions are reported quarterly. About the EA CPE Course
Course Description: The EA CPE 30 Hour CE Personal and Business Entities course is designed for tax preparers who are looking to complete a tax course that will meet the 30 hour EA continuing professional education annual income tax course requirement (IRS Provider #JK8E2). This tax course is actually three tax classes in one. The learning objectives expected to be achieved after completion of this tax course includes a better understanding of the following tax topics.
Platinum's 25-Hour federal tax law tax class covers the personal income tax return, Form 1040 (including Schedule C), the Partnership tax return, Form 1065, and the Corporate Tax Return, Form 1120. Specific topics include the tax treatment of non-business and business income, adjustments to personal income, tax credits and tax payments, tax differences between S and C corporations. Contribution of capital and distributions of income and capital and depreciation (IRS approval number JK8E2-T-00135-20-S) and provides twenty-five hours of CPE credit. Platinum's 3-Hour federal updates tax class covers current personal and business tax return updates. Topics include fundamental inflationary changes that will be used to prepare tax returns (IRS approval number JK8E2-U-00124-20-S) and provides three hours of CPE credit. Platinum's 2-Hour ethics class covers ethical issues for the EA. Issues involving the possession of tax records, charging of fees for the preparation of taxes and when is a tax practitioner acting in a disreputable or incompetent manner, are reviewed (IRS approval number JK8E2-E-00125-20-S) and provides two hours of CPE credit. Upon completing this course you will have an understanding of how to properly prepare and complete the following tax forms: IRS Form 1040, Schedule C, C- Corp return IRS Form 1120 and S-Corp return IRS Form 1120s, Schedule K-1 and Partnership return IRS Form 1065.
Course Organization: Students create a login I.D. and password and have access to the course 24/7. The course is presented in an online E-Book format making the reading material portable if you prefer to work offline. Each reading assignment is then followed by a one or two part quiz presented in a multiple choice format. A series of quiz review questions will then test your understanding of key topics. The answers are submitted online and will be automatically graded. The student will be provided with important feedback and answer key to all quiz questions. Once all of the quizzes are completed, the student will then need to complete a final exam that will review all of the topics covered. The student will receive a pass or fail grade on the final exam but, unlike the quizzes, the student will not be provided with an answer key or any feedback (to comply with IRS guidelines regarding final testing). All quizzes and the final exam(s) must be completed with a passing grade of 70% or better in order to meet the 30 hour CE requirement and receive a Certificate of Completion. The student has unlimited tries to pass the quizzes and the final exam(s). (Note that the completion of the quizzes is not mandatory). Discussion forums are available within the course. Our "Student Course Forum" is available to chat with other students in the same course and our "General Student Forum" is available to chat with students in all courses. The Certificate of Completion can be printed by the student within the course and is also emailed to the student immediately following the successful completion of the course. Course completions are then reported to the IRS and, if applicable, to CTEC by Platinum Professional Services. The tax course is available to the student for six months upon registration. Our current courses are based upon the IRS's most recently available tax laws, forms, and schedules. We provide all students with tax updates throughout the year on our Platinum Blog site.
