2018 CTEC CPE 20 Hour - Personal Income Tax Return
In order to maintain the California Registered Tax Preparer (CRTP) designation you will need to successfully complete our 20 Hour California Tax Course which will allow you to continue to prepare tax returns for compensation in California. Our tax course (CTEC Provider #2052 and IRS Provider # JK8E2) is designed for tax preparers who are looking for a course that will meet both the CTEC and IRS Annual Filing Season Program Continuing Education income tax course requirements. The tax course will review the personal income tax return and will fulfill the CTEC CE and IRS AFSP requirements. Our CTEC-IRS tax course includes 10 hours of federal law topics, 3 hours of federal law updates, 2 hours of ethics and 5 hours of state.
CTEC-IRS Continuing Education Requirements
Course Prerequisites: High school diploma or high school diploma equivalent is recommended. Current registration with the California Tax Education Council (CTEC) is required. The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and the California Tax Education Council (CTEC) also require individuals to possess a valid Personal Tax Identification Number (PTIN).
About the CTEC Continuing Education CourseCourse Description: The CTEC Personal Income Tax Return course (CTEC course #2052-CE-0062) is designed for tax preparers who are looking to complete a tax course that will meet both the required 20 hour CTEC and voluntary 15 hour IRS Continuing Professional Education annual income tax course requirement. This tax course (CTEC Provider #2052 and IRS Provider #JK8E2) is actually four tax classes in one. The learning objectives expected to be achieved after completion of this tax course includes a better understanding of the following tax topics.
Tax Class #1 covers the personal income tax return including proper completion of Form 1040 and related schedules and forms. Topics include the determination of taxable income, adjustments to income, identifying eligible tax credits and calculating total tax liability. A variety of more advanced topics is also reviewed including identifying abusive tax schemes and frivolously filed tax returns, understanding tax considerations for members of the military and international tax topics. The first class (part 1) provides ten hours of CE credit. Tax Class #2 covers 2018 personal tax updates. Topics include the calculation of deductible contributions to IRAs, identifying capital gain and loss limits for tax purposes, defining updated standard mileage rates, and understanding the tax implications of the Affordable Care Act. The second class (part 2) provides three hours of CE credit. Tax Class #3 covers ethical issues including practices and procedures involving the possession of tax records, understanding how to properly disclose fees charged for the preparation of taxes and understanding the definitions of when a tax practitioner is acting in a disreputable or incompetent manner. The third class (part 3) provides two hours of CE credit. The first three combined classes will meet the IRS requirement for the minimum number of CE credit hours for 2018 including the tax updates and ethics requirements. Tax class #4 covers the proper completion of the California Franchise Tax Board form 540 and identifying differences between the federal and California returns and the use of schedule CA (540). The fourth class (part 4) provides 5 hours of CTEC CE credit completing the 20 hour CE CTEC requirement. Upon completing this course you will have an understanding of how to properly prepare and complete IRS form 1040, FTB form 540, and other basic tax forms and provides an introduction to additional tax topics including abusive tax schemes and international tax topics.
Course Organization: This course is presented in an online format. Students create a login I.D. and password to access the course. Once purchased, the course is available for six months. Reading assignments cover the topics in a step-by-step fashion. Each reading assignment is then followed by a one or two part quiz presented in a multiple choice format. The quiz questions will test knowledge of the completed reading assignment. Once answers are submitted the student will be provided with an answer key and feedback, also provided online. The student will then complete the final exam.The student will receive a pass or fail grade on the final test but, unlike the quizzes, will not be provided with an answer key or any feedback (to comply with CTEC guidelines regarding final testing). The final test must be completed with a passing grade of 70% or better in order to meet the 20 hour CE requirement and receive a Certificate of Completion (completion of the quizzes however is not mandatory). Course completion is then reported to CTEC and the IRS by Platinum Professional Services.
